How to Let Customers Change Shipping Method After Placing an Order

Buyers frequently rush through checkout and select free standard delivery, only to realize minutes later that they need the parcel delivered urgently for a birthday, trip, or event. Here is how to enable customer self-service shipping upgrades on Shopify and turn delivery support requests into effortless revenue.

Why Customers Request Shipping Method Changes Post-Purchase

In high-velocity eCommerce stores, shipping method change requests represent one of the most common post-purchase customer inquiries.

These situations typically arise from three common checkout scenarios:

  • Urgent Timeline Realizations: A buyer completes checkout using the default standard 5-day delivery, then immediately checks their calendar and realizes they need the package in 48 hours for a flight, birthday, or holiday.
  • Accidental Default Selection in Express Wallets: 1-click checkout options (Apple Pay, Shop Pay, PayPal) often auto-select the cheapest default shipping rate without making express carrier options prominent.
  • Switching from Local Pickup to Courier Delivery: A buyer chooses in-store pickup by mistake and subsequently discovers they cannot visit the physical retail location.

The Problem with Handling Shipping Upgrades Manually

Native Shopify does not provide buyers with a self-service way to modify or upgrade their delivery method on the order confirmation screen.

When a customer emails support asking to upgrade to Express courier shipping, the manual resolution process is painfully slow:

The Friction of Manual Shipping Adjustments

Support staff must calculate the freight difference, edit the order in Shopify Admin, generate a custom draft invoice, email the payment link to the customer, and wait for payment confirmation. Meanwhile, warehouse 3PL fulfillment systems (ShipStation, ShipHero) may already print standard shipping labels and dispatch the item before payment is collected.

This manual lag results in frustrated customers who miss their delivery deadline, unnecessary support payroll costs, and lost upsell revenue from high-margin express shipping tiers.

The Solution: Customer Self-Service Shipping Method Selection

By placing native Checkout UI Extension blocks on the Thank You page and Order Status page, merchants give buyers complete control to modify their delivery method during a configurable grace period (e.g. 15 or 30 minutes).

1. Real-Time Carrier Rate Fetching

The app dynamically queries active shipping rates (FedEx Overnight, UPS 2-Day, DHL Express, Standard Ground) based on the destination address and cart weight.

2. Automated 3PL Fulfillment Hold

While the edit window is active, a temporary hold tag (post_edit_hold) prevents warehouse automation from generating standard labels prematurely. The hold automatically releases when the timer expires.

With Modrata Order Edit, shipping upgrades happen seamlessly within seconds, delivering a premium post-purchase customer experience.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Enable Shipping Method Editing

Open your Checkout editor and add the Modrata blocks to the Thank you and Order status pages. Watch the short walkthrough video below, then follow the numbered steps:

Walkthrough: Adding Modrata blocks in Checkout EditorNo code required
1

Click Customize on the checkout profile you want to edit

From your Shopify Admin, navigate to Settings > Checkout. Under the Configurations section, find your active live checkout profile and click the Customize button.

💡 Safe Testing in a Draft Profile

To enable and test the extension without affecting your live customers, you can create or duplicate a testing checkout profile. You can perform the exact same process there—it will not get added to your live checkout until you decide to publish.

2

In the editor, click the Apps icon in the top-left toolbar

Inside the Checkout Editor, look at the top-left sidebar toolbar and click the Apps icon (the four-square grid icon) to access installed UI extension blocks.

3

Add the Modrata block to both the Thank You and Order Status pages

Select the Thank You page from the top dropdown and add the Editing Form - Thankyou Page block. Then switch the dropdown to the Order Status page and add the Editing form - Order Page block.

4

Click Save

Click Save in the top-right corner. The self-service order editing and shipping method selection form is now active for all incoming orders.

Recalculating Carrier Rates & Weight Limits

When a customer switches shipping speeds or adds additional items to an order, shipping weight and package dimensions change.

Modrata recalculates real-time carrier rates based on your store's active shipping zones. This prevents revenue leakage on freight costs and ensures your fulfillment team always has the exact courier service tier on the order before label generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can customers downgrade shipping and receive a refund?

Merchants can configure whether downgrades with automated partial refunds or store credit are permitted, or restrict edits to upgrades and address corrections only.

How does this integrate with 3PL and shipping apps like ShipStation?

The updated shipping line item and carrier method update directly in Shopify Admin. When the hold expires, your 3PL imports the order with the updated shipping method already attached.

Can customers also edit their delivery address simultaneously?

Yes. Customers can update both their shipping address and delivery speed in the same self-service session.
